While there are more 18 year olds from disadvantaged backgrounds entering higher education than ever before, they are still far less likely to attend a top university than the most privileged.
In fact, students from the most advantaged backgrounds are nearly seven times as likely to attend a top university as those from the poorest.
And only 6% of doctors, 12% of chief executives and 12% of journalists today are from working-class origins.
Here at Exeter, we’ve been working hard to change this narrative. We think that everyone with the potential to benefit from quality higher education should have equal opportunity to do so. We’ve introduced initiatives such as pathway programmes in disadvantaged areas; summer schools; schemes to support care leavers and disabled students; and also scholarships to help bright students who would otherwise struggle to attend university.
More recently we have launched a Sanctuary Scholarships scheme, which is available for people who are seeking asylum, have limited leave to remain, ‘humanitarian protection’ or refugee status, and International Care Leavers.
With your help we can support even more students to succeed.
Do you believe that everyone should have the opportunity to study at University? Help us to provide more opportunities for talented students to come to Exeter, whatever their background. If 100 alumni and supporters donate it will unlock another £2,000 from an alumni donor.
Did you graduate before 2000? Can you help future generations join you? If 50 people make a gift of any size, another £1,000 will be donated by an alum.
Did you graduate after 2000? You're in good company as most of our alumni community are in this group! Can you help future generations join you? If 100 people would make a gift of any size, another £1,500 will be donated by an alum.
Do you remember the Queen opening the Forum in 2012? We might not be able to arrange that memory for everyone, but we want to give as many people as possible the chance to make their own great Exeter memories. You can help others to come to Exeter - 75 donations will unlock an additional £1,000 alumni match for Scholarships and Bursaries.
